WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (MI-10) has received the Macedonia Friendship award presented by the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD). Metodija Koloski, the President of the UMD, stated that Miller has raised awareness of Macedonia and has “worked to advance justice, equality and human rights for all people.” Miller expressed thanks for the award.
“The Republic of Macedonia is a true friend and ally of the United States, and I am so pleased to receive this honor,” said Miller. “Over the past two decades, Macedonia has rebuilt their society that was too long oppressed by Communism, and has emerged a free and democratic, multi-ethnic country.”
The UMD was founded in 2004 and is the largest global non-governmental Macedonian organization in the world. Koloski cited Miller’s support of Macedonia’s NATO accession, as well as her recognition of Macedonia’s support of American troops abroad as some of the reasons why Miller was chose for the Friendship Award. Miller reiterated her support for the Southeast European nation’s efforts to join NATO.
“Macedonia has helped to ensure that the events of 9/11 are not repeated again, in the United States or elsewhere, by sending troops to support the expansion of freedom across the globe,” said Miller. “I strongly support the Republic of Macedonia being added as a member of NATO. The NATO alliance only grows stronger as we expand membership to friendly nations who also value democracy, freedom and liberty.”
